SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The association is for secondary and post-secondary students participating in industrial, electrical and heath technology career-technical or vocational training. Started in 1965 under the name VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) in Nashville, Tennessee, the club was chartered in 14 states. A year later, that number doubled and membership grew to almost 30,000 student and adult members.
Today, the club, whose name was changed to SkillsUSA in 2002, serves over 300,000 students and instructors, with 13,000 school chapters in 54 states and U.S. territories. More than 14,500 instructors and administrators are professional members of SkillsUSA. Our local chapter is part of SkillsUSA Ohio’s Southeast region, one of five regions in the state.
SkillsUSA’s mission is to help each student excel by providing learning and leadership opportunities that help student members become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens.
All students in Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Automotive Technology, Electronics Technology, Health Careers and Building Trades career-tech programs at the Career Center are invited to become members of SkillsUSA.
In June of 2008, Michael Gibson, a Building Trades program completer and River View High School graduate was awarded a gold medal in the Carpentry competition at the National SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, Missouri. We were very proud of Michael.
This year’s SkillsUSA club advisor is Mr. Steve Ervin, Electronics Technology instructor.
