Retiring Electronics Program

About the Program

Students in this program spend two years studying digital electronics, including electronic theory and the components that store, transmit or alter electrical signals. Students build and analyze various types of digital circuits and then test and troubleshoot problems with their operation. Computers of various types are used to reinforce the technology studied.

Students will have the opportunity to learn the basic principles and concepts needed to pass the ISCET’s Certified Electronic Technician exam. This exam covers both consumer and industrial electronics technology and is the internationally- recognized industry certification standard needed for electronics professionals.

Length of Program: 2 Years

Partnership With: Kent State University – Tuscarawas and Central Ohio Technical College

Career Pathways: Electronics Repair Technician, Cable TV / Satellite Technician, Telephone Service Technician, IBEW Apprentice (Trade Union)

Early Placement

If, during your junior year, you have maintained an acceptable GPA and attendance record, you may qualify for an early-placement work option during your senior year.

Placed in a job through this program, you will have the chance to practice the skills you have learned during your first year of study. Depending on your ability and interest, you might work as an electronics sales clerk or as a computer technician assistant. This work experience will compose a large part of your final lab grade. Not only will you receive program credit, but you will also have the opportunity to build employability skills, garner trust and a positive work reference from your employer.

Further Education

A high percentage of program completers go on to attend a two or four-year college, desiring to further their education in the field.

Articulation agreements are also in place with other area colleges. As a program completer, you have the opportunity to automatically earn college credits through these agreement, if you successfully complete the two-year Electronics program. Colleges with whom the program articulate include Kent State University – Tuscarawas and Central Ohio Technical College.

Whatever path you decide to follow, you will find that your training at the Coshocton County Career Center will leave you well-prepared to advance into many types of careers in the electronics field.

Associations

Electronics SkillsUSA

As a student in the program, you will also have the chance to join and participate in SkillsUSA – the student association for several career-technical programs at the Career Center. This involvement will give you an opportunity to improve your leadership and interpersonal skills and to compete in local, regional, state and national skills contests.

Mr Ervin

Mr. Ervin

Mr. Steve Ervin has been teaching the Tech Prep Electronics Technology program at the Career Center for twenty years.

Mr. Ervin holds a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from COTC, with special certifications in Computer Technology, Network Technology, Computer Drafting and Computer Programming. He was awarded his career-tech Teaching License through Ohio Department of Education.

Prior to teaching, Mr. Ervin worked for ten years for both the government and in commercial industry. He started with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), designing underground control systems used at Dulles Airport in Washington DC, as well as other aeronautical sites around the country.
